Inspiration for The Hunger Games

Suzanne Collins has said that The Hunger Games was inspired by the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur, the Roman gladiators, reality TV games, and actual TV footage of young people at war. What is the strongest parallel you see between the events of The Hunger Games and our society or history? Do you find any comparisons to events that have been part of your own life?

I definitely see a parallel between our "rubber-necking" or "ambulance-chasing" society and the Hunger Games. That said, I think *most* people in reality don't want bad things to happen to people, but they can't help being curious about accidents. When I read the Hunger Games, one of my thoughts/suspicions/hopes was that the people in the Capitol didn't realize how REAL it was -- in other words, I wanted to believe that they think the Hunger Games are fake, like the way many of our "reality" shows are staged. But I've read Catching Fire (the sequel) and still not gotten any indication that that's the case... So then I'm left to ruminate on how much people are willing to accept when they are far enough removed from it.
